Hey users! My Thursday blog is late, but I wanted to write it after Friday to discuss England's World Cup hopes.
Just one win is needed in the remaining group game to reach next summer's event in Brazil after a convincing 4-1 home victory over Montenegro on Friday night. The last game is against Poland at Wembley, and England must surely win to progress as Ukraine, the second-placed team, will surely win against minnows San Marino, who have lost each of their nine group games, conceding 46 goals and scoring just 1 in the process. England must win. So, know your enemy.
Poland are a well-balanced, strong team. In goal they have the choice of two extremely good Premier League goalkeepers in the form of Arsenal's Wojciech Szczesny and Southampton's Artur Boruc, Boruc having kept five successive Premier League clean sheets to help his team to fourth in the table. Boruc must be beaten at least once for England to reach the World Cup - with the form he is in this will be hard. The obvious threat to England is world-class forward Robert Lewandowski, who plays for German giants Borussia Dortmund. Lewandowski possesses a powerful and accurate shot, a great heading ability and the ability to score from any angle or in any situation. Our defence must be sharp on Tuesday to ensure that Lewandowski does not score and shatter our World Cup dreams.
Poland will play with freedom, due to the fact that their own World Cup hopes ended following a 1-0 defeat in Ukraine on Friday. This is a team we must beat - a place at the World Cup depends on it. There will be no blog on Tuesday as the game is on Tuesday night, so there will be a blog on Wednesday followed by my next Thursday blog. In Tuesday's blog I will be discussing the game with Poland and my views on why England did/didn't qualify. I believe that England can beat Poland and reach the World Cup, and I hope they do. What do you think? Please let me know in the comments below.
